Construction continues at The Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.

Crews worked amidst light sprinkles on Friday, July 29; the project is running smoothly and on schedule.

Groundwork remains the focus at the construction site as sewer lines are relocated and the field is leveled and prepared for new facilities, according to contractor Rinderknecht Associates.

Upon completion in Summer 2017, Mount Mercy’s new athletic complex will provide a permanent home for men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track and field, baseball, and softball — six of the university’s 17 intercollegiate athletic teams.

Preparing Ground

Groundwork is one of the most expensive and least visible steps in this 22-acre project. City sewer lines have to be relocated so that drainage flows appropriately around the fields.

Most of this work has been completed for the track and field, soccer, softball and practice field sites.

After new sewer pipes are set, the next major focus will be pouring concrete for the 140+ stall parking lot, which will be accessible from 19th Street NE. The lot should take shape in the next few weeks.

A fence leans next to a fire hydrant on a mound of dirt. Ground around this pile has been cleared out of the way, bringing ground level as many as five feet lower than before the project began.

Temporary sewer lines run across the site as underground plumbing is relocated.

CeMar Trail

The City of Cedar Rapids awarded contact to Dave Schmitt Construction Company — the same company who is advancing work on The Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex — for the portion of the CeMar Trail which will run through our facility.

Two stakes with bright orange paint are planted in dirt, next to a line of trees on the edge of the project site.

Construction on The Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex began in mid-June and expected to be completed in August 2017.

Mount Mercy University is set to welcome almost 170 singers to campus Monday and Tuesday for its annual All-State Choral Workshop. The workshop, now in its fourth year, prepares high school students in the Iowa All-State Choral repertoire.

Mount Mercy’s Director of Music Activities Dr. Gerry Kreitzer and distinguished clinicians Carol Tralau, Allen Chapman, Duane Philgreen, Amy Farley and Kent Keating will assist the singers in learning notes, rhythms and texts for each piece. They will also offer coaching in the expression and style of each piece, and offer helpful approaches and demonstrations of the audition process.

“These students are preparing for all-state with some of the most respected and talented music educators in the area,” Kreitzer said. “The amount of experience between the five clinicians and myself totals about 180 years, and together we’ve successfully prepared thousands for All-State. These two days give the students a tremendous head start.”

Three new trustees were recently elected to the Mount Mercy University Board of Trustees: Ken Brown, Kirk Kaalberg and Mike Wehr ‘03. All three members bring tremendous leadership talent to the board.

Brown serves as chief executive officer of Modern Companies, Inc., and director of Modern Holdings, Inc., based in Cedar Rapids. Prior to being named CEO, Brown was president and project manager for Modern Piping, Inc. He is responsible for much of the company’s growth, expanding into multiple entities including sheet metal, compressed air, building controls and automation, and its newest addition, FabPro LLC, a software company.

Kaalberg held a variety of management positions at Teleconnect, TelecomUSA and MCI from 1983 through 1989. He joined McLeodUSA as the company’s third employee in 1990 and held management positions, including president of Network Services. In 2000, Kaalberg joined Aavin Equity Advisors as senior partner. He is currently on the boards of Archon, AdTrack, Moss Enterprises, and is Chairman of the Board for Limolink, Inc.

Wehr, a 2003 graduate of Mount Mercy, currently serves as the chief operating officer at Raining Rose in Cedar Rapids. Beginning with the company directly out of college, Wehr has served as sales manager and vice president of sales and operations. He is involved with numerous community boards and a member of the university’s alumni board.

“We are fortunate to have these three individuals join the Mount Mercy community as trustees,” said University President Laurie Hamen, J.D.  “They bring talent, energy and a wealth of knowledge that will add even more depth to the board’s important work. I look forward to working with them to advance Mount Mercy’s crucial mission of academic excellence and compassionate service.”

Mount Mercy University Athletics teamed up with Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity on Tuesday and Wednesday to help prepare for Habitat’s A Brush with Kindness Week, set to take place Aug. 23–27 in the historic Wellington Heights neighborhood.

The volunteers included members of Mount Mercy’s men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams. Together, they’ve prepped houses for a week of scraping, painting and landscaping.

“It’s really important to give back to the community and see a renovation of Cedar Rapids as a whole,” said volunteer and women’s volleyball team member Natalie Parizek. “Cedar Rapids has gone through some rough patches; it’s nice to see things being done.”

Teammate Abbie Perez said she has learned a lot from the volunteer experience.

“I’ve learned it takes a lot of people to do a job like this,” she said. “It’s fun working with our volleyball team and giving back to the community.”

Mount Mercy University encourages students, staff and faculty to partake in service projects throughout the year. In the 2015-16 school year, Mount Mercy’s community logged over 16,000 volunteer hours.

A Brush with Kindness is a program of Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity that helps low-income homeowners by offering exterior home improvements. Volunteer teams work to improve the condition of homes by painting, landscaping, and performing minor exterior repairs at minimal costs to homeowners who would be unable to complete home repairs on their own.

Tom Castle

Mount Mercy University Associate Provost & Executive Director for Academic Innovation Dr. Tom Castle was awarded the Council for Accelerated Programs Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with adult students. Only three others have received the prestigious award.

A member of CAP’s board for eight years, Castle served as chair for two terms after the loss of another board member. He also served as an at-large board member, treasurer for multiple terms and vice-chair. He has led several webinars for CAP, represented the organization at conferences and facilitated workshops at CAP conferences. Notably, Castle helped author the national CAP Quality Standards, which is used as an evaluation tool for institutions across the county.

“This Lifetime Achievement Award means a great deal to me,” Castle said. “CAP is a large network of adult-focused higher education professionals, and over the years, I have relied on these peers for advice on how to best teach and serve the working adult student. The members of CAP care about the quality of education we provide to adult students, and I have always valued my relationship with other CAP members. I could not be more honored to be recognized by such an outstanding organization.”

Castle accepted the award during the organization’s 2016 conference in Austin, Texas, along with another Mount Mercy faculty member—Marcie Van Note was awarded CAP’s Excellence in Teaching award.

Past Lifetime Achievement Award winners include Royce Ann Collins, past chair and current associate professor at Kansas State and editor of the Journal of Continuing Higher Education; Pat Ellis, past chair and associate dean at Stevenson University; and Diane Bamford-Reece, associate vice president for Council for Adult and Experiential Learning.

Congratulations, Tom!

About 100 Mount Mercy University freshmen are teaming up with the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance to help with service projects around the city during Mercy in Action Day, Aug. 21.

For the second consecutive year, Mount Mercy students are encouraged to explore downtown Cedar Rapids while participating in the service projects. Projects include trash pick-up, landscaping, and cleaning benches and lights.

“This service day sets the precedence for the rest of the student’s time at the university,” said Isaiah Corbin, director of volunteerism and service learning at Mount Mercy. “It shows the students that Mount Mercy places a very strong emphasis on service and also helps them understand what makes Mount Mercy what it is.”

The day also gives students from outside Cedar Rapids a chance to interact with local business owners and see the place they will call home for the next four years.
