Each year, the third Monday in January is designated as MLK Day—the only federal holiday observed as a day of service. Across the country, individuals and groups will donate their time to community projects, honoring the commitment to service and community exemplified in the life of Dr. King.

Mount Mercy University students, faculty and staff will honor Dr. King’s legacy on January 19 by teaming up with Western Fraternal Life Association’s Moose Lodge to make fleece scarves for those in need. Scarves will be tied from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Betty Cherry Heritage Hall on Mount Mercy’s campus. Students will remember the words of Dr. King through readings held during the same time in the Sisters of Mercy University Center Commons. The university will also offer an opportunity to support Kids Against Hunger by packaging meals from 2:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. in Betty Cherry.

In the days leading up to MLK Day of Service, the university will act as a donation site for local Americorps’ Fill the Pantry Food and Hygiene Drive. Gifts of non-perishable food and personal care items may be dropped in bins throughout campus from January 12-16 to benefit area shelters.

“We’re excited to partner with both the Moose Lodge and Americorps to offer our students valuable experiences this year,” said Isaiah Corbin, coordinator for volunteerism & service learning. “Celebrating Dr. King through helping others a beautiful way to build a better community and we’re glad to be a part of it.”

Graduate students prepare to visit Belize for third year

On January 17, Mount Mercy University graduate students will board a plane bound for the Central American country of Belize. Nineteen students from the Master of Business Administration and Master of Strategic Leadership programs—the largest graduate group Mount Mercy has sent since the program was implemented in 2013—are journeying nearly 2,000 miles to help small businesses grow.

“As part of the International Business Strategy and Culture course, Mount Mercy students will share their business expertise with our Belizean partners,” explained Celina Peerman, adjunct faculty. “From financial assessments to inventory to marketing and more, we’ll give their small businesses tips to help them thrive.”

Six new partnerships await the students this year—a bakery, chocolatier, herbal medicine shop, the University of Belize and a community civic group will benefit from assessments. The graduate students will also offer additional business support for a Belizean tea house that was built with the aid of Mount Mercy undergraduate students last year.

“Mount Mercy undergraduates traveled to Belize in 2014 for a service learning experience in which they helped a local farmer build a tea house, helping him fulfill a long-time goal,” said Deb Oliver, director of MBA and MSL programs. “This year the graduate students have a chance to help this same farmer examine his tea house in terms of a business. It will be exciting to see how far he’s come over the last year, and we can’t wait to help him shape his business plan.”

“It’s an incredible experience to help someone’s dream come true,” said Peerman. “We’re completely blessed to have the opportunity to do so.”

This will be the third year Mount Mercy students have made a positive impact the area of Punta Gorda, Belize.

To celebrate the fall inauguration of President Laurie Hamen, Mount Mercy University has partnered with Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity (CVHFH) to construct three new Cedar Rapids homes. As announced in December, Mount Mercy faculty, staff and students will provide labor for CVHFH Youth United and Pope Francis Build projects.

Members from the university community will staff build sights once a month as part of what the school has named Habitat Saturdays. Mount Mercy volunteers will work on the Youth Build at 324 7th Street SW for the first time on Saturday, January 17 from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. President Hamen and her husband Bill will lead the mix of Mount Mercy volunteers.

“Nearly 25 Mount Mercy faculty, staff, students and friends are looking forward to participating in this opportunity to change lives,” said Isaiah Corbin, coordinator of volunteerism and service learning. “Giving back in meaningful ways is at the heart of our campus and is the backbone of a Mercy education.”

African-American community leaders from the Corridor will gather at Mount Mercy University on Feb. 11, from 5:30-7 p.m. to participate in a professional women’s panel: Black Women Symposium. The panel will take place in Flaherty Community Room, second floor of Basile Hall.

Associate Professor of Social Work April Dirks-Bihun, Ph.D. and the university’s multicultural affairs committee have organized the event in honor of Black History Month.

“Black women in America have learned to find humor in heartache, to see beauty in the midst of desperation,” said Dumayi Gutierrez, Mount Mercy graduate assistant for multicultural affairs. “The symposium panelists will discuss their professional journeys and the hurdles they’ve faced along the way.”

Panelists will include: Dr. Ruth White, director/president of The Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success; Evette Creighton, engineer at Rockwell; Quinneka Lee, assistant director of residence life and intercultural life at Cornell College; Shawna Clemente, student success coordinator at Mount Mercy; Kendra Malone, Safe Zone at University of Iowa; Shaweka Outlaw, facility buyer at Cedar River Mill; Sherree Wilson, Ph.D., associate dean, cultural affairs & diversity initiatives at University of Iowa; BaSheeba Mays, graduate assistant for residence life at Mount Mercy.

“It is hopeful that this program will continue to engage the campus and community in discussion of social justice,” said Gutierrez.

Mount Mercy welcomes CNN correspondent John Allen to campus

Mount Mercy University’s Presidential Lecture Series was established in 2009 to highlight issues of value to the institution and its founders the Sisters of Mercy. This year, the university welcomes journalist John L. Allen Jr., senior Vatican analyst for CNN and associate editor at The Boston Globe.

Allen is the author of nine books on Catholic affairs including, “Against the Tide: The Radical Leadership of Pope Francis.” This work reflects upon the pope’s humility, compassion and vision for the church.

Allen’s visit falls on the heels of House Speaker Boehner’s announcement last week of the pope’s plan to address Congress this September.

“The Congressional conversation marks the first time a pontiff will have addressed a joint meeting,” said Mount Mercy University President Laurie Hamen. “Pope Francis is opening doors to a new era, and we’re looking forward to exploring his leadership with Mr. Allen — a journalist at the forefront of Vatican coverage.”

Allen’s lecture will take place on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Mercy on Mount Mercy’s campus. The public is welcome to attend this free event.

Mount Mercy hosts immigration speaker, interfaith service

On February 23, Sr. Kathleen Erickson will visit Mount Mercy University to lecture on her experiences serving immigrants near the Mexican border. Her discussion will begin at 7 p.m. in the Flaherty Community Room, second floor Basile Hall.

Sr. Kathleen has been a member of the Sisters of Mercy for nearly 50 years, focusing on the issue of immigration since 1991. Sister Kathleen opened an immigrant shelter for women and ran immersion experiences for those curious about immigration issues.

“Immigration is one of the six critical concerns that our university founders, the Sisters of Mercy, focus on,” stated Isaiah Corbin, coordinator for volunteerism and service learning. “Sr. Kathleen has a tremendous amount of knowledge on the topic of immigration because of the work she has done to create a less hostile environment along the border.”

On the heels of Sr. Kathleen’s visit, there will be an interfaith service to reflect on migrants and immigrants on February 24 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Mercy. During this special service, prayers and readings from various traditions will be brought together to emphasize the need for compassion, love, and understanding for all humankind. A member of the Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants in Chicago, Sr. Maria Zeiman, will speak on her experiences of working with immigrants.

“The interfaith service will allow people to come together and stand in solidarity for immigrants in the United States and all around the world,” explained Corbin.

The events are open to the public and free of charge; seating may be limited.

Mount Mercy launches new curriculums

Mount Mercy University continues to expand academics this spring by offering two new undergraduate majors, a new minor and additional tracks of study.

The Department of Natural and Applied Sciences welcomes chemistry and science marketing majors in Spring 2015.

“While chemistry has existed as a minor,” stated Terri Crumley, dean of admissions at Mount Mercy, “we’re pleased to transition it to a major with tracks in biochemistry and forensic science to help more students work toward their bachelor’s degrees and ultimately their careers.”

Science marketing is a one-of-a-kind hybrid major that combines science courses with marketing classes to give students an edge in sales careers.

“The science marketing major is the perfect fit for students with business minds and hearts in the science world,” Crumley explained. “This is a great area of study for students aspiring to be in medical or pharmaceutical sales.”

Mount Mercy’s management major now offers four tracks including operations management, international management, sustainability/corporate social responsibility, and sports management.

An environmental justice minor was added along with a new endorsement for aspiring teachers, English as a second language.

“These new additions to our already diverse curriculum offer even more exciting outlets for students to pursue their goals,” Crumley stated. “It’s just another way Mount Mercy strives to provide opportunities for all students to receive a quality education.”
