Mount Mercy University will hold its annual Multicultural Fair on Wednesday, March 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. in Hennessey Recreation Center. The fair will showcase the various cultures represented in Mount Mercy’s diverse student body by inviting international students to share their heritage and customs with others.

Each of the 18 represented countries will have a table set up to display their culture through posters, artifacts, wardrobes, food and other items. Additional countries will be represented by representatives of local organizations. Classmates, professors and community members are encouraged to visit these tables to learn about each unique country. The event will also feature performances and much more.

“This event is a student favorite because it allows everyone to celebrate diversity, meet new people, try and learn things about cultures from around the world in one space,” said Vicky Hooi, graduate assistant for Multicultural Affairs. “It’s also a chance for our international students to show how proud they are of their background.”

Countries represented at the fair include: Gambia, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Mexico, El Salvador, Czech Republic, Russia, Germany, Jamaica, Burundi, Norway, Canada, Haiti, Malaysia and Australia. There will also be representatives from the National Czech and Slovak Museum, African American Museum, and India Bazaar.

Traditional foods prepared by students and dining services will give participants the chance to explore cultures even further, and door prizes will be given away during the event.
