Mount Mercy University’s Presidential Lecture Series was established in 2009 to highlight issues of value to the institution and its founders the Sisters of Mercy. This year, the university welcomes journalist John L. Allen Jr., senior Vatican analyst for CNN and associate editor at The Boston Globe.

Allen is the author of nine books on Catholic affairs including, “Against the Tide: The Radical Leadership of Pope Francis.” This work reflects upon the pope’s humility, compassion and vision for the church.

Allen’s visit falls on the heels of House Speaker Boehner’s announcement last week of the pope’s plan to address Congress this September.

“The Congressional conversation marks the first time a pontiff will have addressed a joint meeting,” said Mount Mercy University President Laurie Hamen. “Pope Francis is opening doors to a new era, and we’re looking forward to exploring his leadership with Mr. Allen — a journalist at the forefront of Vatican coverage.”

Allen’s lecture will take place on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Mercy on Mount Mercy’s campus. The public is welcome to attend this free event.
