Immigration reform is a priority for the United States Bishops and the Sisters of Mercy. This issue is currently receiving national attention, and there are some indications that there could be progress soon. As a Mercy institution of higher learning, it seems appropriate for Mount Mercy to spend some energy during Lent to raise awareness on these issues and encourage prayer and advocacy.
The following outlines what activities will take place during Lent that will encourage reflection on Immigration as a Mount Mercy campus.
Wednesday, March 5th
Ash Wednesday:
President Hamen will join the Fast 4 Families and invites the Mount Mercy Community to join her as an act of solidarity and prayer for those who suffer because of unjust immigration policies.
Noon - Mass and Distribution of Ashes
6:00 p.m. – Interdenominational Ash Wednesday Service
Sunday, March 9th
First Sunday of Lent
Faculty, staff and students of the Mount Mercy community are invited to participate in the CRS Rice Bowl – to support those programs that help the hungry worldwide and in our own community
Wednesday, April 2nd
Day of Prayer and Fasting
Spend at least 20 minutes in prayer for those who work toward just immigration policies and for those who suffer from current immigration policies.
Gather for a letter writing campaign to our congressional representatives urging them to address the moral crisis of families under our current immigration system.
Soup Supper and Sharing at 5:30 in the Campus Ministry Lounge. We break our day of fast, join in a soup supper and watch a video that helps us see the human face of migrants and their suffering.
Wednesday, April 16th
Seder Supper
5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Join us for the Seder Supper that helps us remember the Biblical people, their Exodus and migration and their relationship with God.
