Nearly 300 guests are expected to attend the 71st NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet in Cedar Rapids on October 26.  Mount Mercy University is proud to partner in sponsorship of this annual awareness-building event.

“Mount Mercy is pleased to support NAACP’s efforts,” states Dr. Jan Handler, provost.  “Their advocacy toward social justice is steadfast and one we can all stand behind.”

This year’s keynote speaker is award-winning author Wil Haygood, whose book “The Butler: A Witness to History” was recently adapted for a major motion picture.  Haygood has penned numerous biographies, including a piece on the first African American member of Congress, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., which was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cedar Rapids Convention Complex.  Mount Mercy welcomes Mr. Haygood to Cedar Rapids and all attendees to this year’s NAACP banquet.
