[Softball] Mustangs Extend Win Streak to Eight, Sweep Bobcats

PERU, Neb. – Tonight the Mustangs faced the Bobcats of Peru State College in a conference doubleheader. After sweeping this team just five days prior, the Mustangs completed the series sweep taking both games this evening 7-0 and 7-1. The Mustangs are rolling on an eight-game winning streak improving to 28-18 overall and 19-13 in the Heart of America Conference.In game one, the Mustangs raced out of the gates throwing one run up on the scoreboard in the top of the first. From there on out it would be all Mustangs as they would add two more runs in the top of the fourth and four in the seventh. Tawny Menster (SR/Olin, Iowa) pitched a complete-game shutout allowing just three hits while walking none and sitting down a season-best 10. Offensive leaders for the Mustangs included Payton Bruner (JR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) going 3-for-4 with one RBI, Emily Oler (SO/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) going 2-for-3, including a two-run homerun, and Jolona Shield (SR/Lawrence, Kan.) going 1-for-3 with two RBI.Game two followed in a similar fashion. The two teams were held scoreless until the Mustangs exploded to collected two runs in the top of the third followed by three more in the fourth. The Mustangs tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and seventh, but could not complete the shutout allowing the Bobcats to score one in the bottom of the sixth. In game two, the Mustang offense was led by Jessica Miller (SR/Williamsburg, Iowa) going 4-for-4 at the plate, including a two-run homerun, Michelle Mack (FR/Braidwood, Ill.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Payton Bruner was 1-for-4 with one RBI. Additionally, Audrey Grove (FR/South English, Iowa) was 3-for-4 at the plate followed by Morgan Braughton (SO/Marion, Iowa) going 2-for-4. Oler was 1-for-4 including a double. On the mound, Madelyn Irwin (JR/Orange Park, Fla.) got the start throwing five innings to receive the win allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out three. Jayna Witzany (FR/Cottage Grove, Minn.) came in to throw the remaining two innings not allowing any runs or hits while walking none and striking out three.Up next, the Mustangs will wrap up Heart of America Conference play with two more doubleheaders on the road at Evangel University on Friday, April 26 and MidAmerica Nazarene University on Saturday, April 27.
