Award-winning author Samrat Upadhyay will visit Mount Mercy University on Thursday, April 4, as part of the Global Issue Series. A Q&A will be held at 3:30 p.m., and a reading from one of Upadhyay’s novels will follow in the evening at 7:00 p.m. Both events will be held in Basile Hall’s Flaherty Community Room and are free and open to the public; seating may be limited.
Upadhyay, author of The Guru of Love, Arresting God in Kathmandu, and The Royal Ghosts, is the first Nepali-born fiction writer whose literary works were published in English.
His novel, Arresting God in Kathmandu, has been published in French and Greek and was the recipient of a Whiting Writers’ Award. The novel was also picked for the 2001 Barnes & Noble Discover Great Writers Program. Additional awards Upadhyay has received include: New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 2003, Asian American Literacy Award in 2007, Society of Midland Authors Book Award, a San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of 2003, a Best of Fiction 2006 by the Washington Post, and a BookSense 76 collection award.
Upadhyay has written for the New York Times and his stories have been read on National Public Radio and BBC Radio. He currently teaches at Indiana University in the creative writing program and is working on his third novel and collection of short stories.
