Dr. Gerry Kreitzer, director of music activities at Mount Mercy University, was awarded the 2016 National Federation Outstanding Music Educator State Award by the Iowa High School Music Association. Kreitzer was recognized at the 2017 All-State Music Festival on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The award is given to those who have distinguished themselves for exemplary service to high school music programs in the United States. Each state recognizes one person annually. Credentials for those winners are then placed into consideration for sectional and national award consideration.
“Dr. Kreitzer is one of the few individuals in Iowa who has done it all,” said Alan Greiner, executive director of the Iowa High School Music Association, in a press release. “He is equally comfortable working in the choral, band and orchestral realms and has experienced success in each of them. His warm and engaging personality, knowledge base and personal work ethic make him one of our true gems in music education.”
Kreitzer’s choral ensembles gained national recognition performing at regional and national American Choral Directors Association and National Association for Music Education conferences in 1993–96. As Washington High School’s show choir leader from 1990–2011, he was the recipient of numerous Grand Championship Awards at invitational festivals. His work in vocal jazz is equally impressive. Washington High School’s Slice of Jazz vocal ensemble was invited to perform for the National ACDA Convention in 2011.
Kreitzer taught more than 700 students who were named Iowa All-State Musicians during his tenure at the high school level. He served as guest director eight times for his district’s All-State Choral Workshop, each time working with more than 250 students. Kreitzer has held five All-State Choral Workshops while at Mount Mercy, serving more than 900 students.
“Dr. Gerry Kreitzer is an amazing educator and musician,” said Terri Crumley, assistant vice president and dean of admissions. “His love of music, passion for teaching and compassionate spirit have had an immeasurable impact on the students and community here at Mount Mercy University and throughout the state of Iowa.”
