Mount Mercy University and Coe College students will join forces to volunteer for a cause on Sunday, Sept. 17 during Mound View Cleanup. Volunteers will tidy up Central Park and the surrounding area from 11:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Both institutions call the Mound View neighborhood home and have made it a tradition to team up to remove trash from the area twice each year. It began as a challenge from Mount Mercy to Coe, with both schools having a high number of student volunteers.
“While many activities relate to service at Mount Mercy, this event is one of our favorites,” said Jamarco Clark, coordinator of volunteerism and service-learning at Mount Mercy. “It gives our students a chance to be directly involved in taking care of our neighborhood and provides a fun day of collaboration between the two schools.”
Both schools emphasize volunteerism within the Cedar Rapids community and incorporate service into their curriculum. In 2016-17 alone, Mount Mercy students, employees and alumni tracked over 15,800 volunteer hours.
